FLOSC 2019

About the Competition

The 18th Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition is on display on the Lemon Street Promenade now through the end of 2018. Many may not be aware that the sculptures found on Lemon Street are a part of a special exhibit that changes annually. This year’s competition has brought a diverse array of sculptures to those blocks of downtown Lakeland.

A call to artists was put out in the fall of 2017 asking for sculpture submissions to be considered. A jury comprised of City staff, Polk Museum of Art representatives, and members of the arts community in Lakeland gathered to review and jury the pieces submitted. Over 60 submissions narrowing them down to the 10 to be displayed over the next year.

  • Chris Plaisted | New Milford, CT

    A Note from the Artist

My sculpture tends to focus on forms of conflict. It may be in the concept: man vs. nature, social vs. emotion or it may be the tension created by the use of contrasting materials. I connect with the juxtaposition of different materials, steel with copper and concrete, wood with metals. I believe that the opposing materials, or colors in my work, intensify each element’s properties to produce a more dynamic form of fine art.

    A Note from the Artist

The story of Giotto responding to a submission request for a commission to the pope with a perfect hand drawn circle has stayed with me for fifty some years. Round as the O in Giotto is a phrase from my Renaissance Art History class that brings to mind not only Giotto but also modern art.
