LAKELAND, FL (August 27, 2020) | The City of Lakeland recently purchased an aquatic plant harvester built by Inland Lake Harvesters, Inc. of Burlington, Wisconsin and we are looking to the public to help name the machine. Laurie Smith, Manager of Lakes & Stormwater said, “Technically the harvester is a boat, registered as a vessel with the State of Florida so we need a clever name for our new boat that also happens to remove invasive aquatic vegetation.”
LAKELAND, FL (August 26, 2020) | The Junior League of Greater Lakeland, the organizers of the Lakeland Christmas Parade and the City of Lakeland have made a decision to cancel the 2020 Lakeland Christmas Parade due to the complications of COVID-19. The organizing committee has obvious concerns regarding the pandemic and the unknowns of what impacts the virus may have going forward.

LAKELAND, FL (August 21, 2020) | The City of Lakeland in partnership with Bonnet Springs Park (a non-profit organization) will be submitting an application to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for a Florida General Infrastructure Program Mitigation Grant (CDBG-MIT) on September 14, 2020.
LAKELAND, FL (August 21, 2020) | More than 5,100 Lakelanders rose to the challenge of keeping plastic bags out of their blue recycling carts. As a part of Lakeland’s Bag-Free Recycling initiative, homes serviced by the City of Lakeland’s Solid Waste and Recycling Division received a mailing describing the damage caused by bagged recyclables and plastic film in recycling containers. Residents were challenged to place a sticker on their recycling cart to show their commitment to keeping bagged recyclables and plastic wrapping out of their cart.

LAKELAND, FL (August 14, 2020) | Upon arrival at the Gandy Pool at the Kelly Recreation Complex this morning (Friday, August 14, 2020), Parks and Recreation Department staff discovered a broken pipe associated with the chiller system for the pool, which also caused the water level in the pool to drop. Chillers are used during warm months to keep the water at a more manageable temperature for efficient maintenance. At this point, the break appears to have occurred due to the average life span, etc., associated with aquatics parts and pieces (exposure to weather, water, pressure, chemicals during normal wear).

Felix Noel Molina, age 42, has been arrested and will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Molina was known by the victims. LAKELAND, FL (August 13, 2020) | In coordination with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the City of Lakeland is establishing a modern roundabout at the intersection of SR 572 (Drane Field Road) and Don Emerson Drive. This road improvement will facilitate the anticipated increase of intersection operations and improve traffic safety. The project is currently in the design phase with construction slated for late Spring 2021.
