  SR 33 (Lakeland Hills Boulevard) Improvement Project

  Major Points:

  • Roadway Changes: Four travel lanes with curb and gutter from Parkview Place to north of Miami Street; 12-foot raised median; bi-directional left turn lane north of Miami Street to Granada Street.
  • Safety Upgrades: New mid-block pedestrian crossings with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) and Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB), 8-foot sidewalks, ADA-compliant ramps, LED traffic signals.
  • Lighting: Street lighting added and upgraded at signalized intersections.
  • Construction Impact: Lane closures, detours, and temporary side street closures; enhanced bus routes by Citrus Connection starting October 21, 2024.

  • Roadway Changes: road resurfacing, four-way intersection will convert to a two-lane roundabout, roadway grading, lane widening, improved utilities and drainage, new medians installed on Drane Field Road between Waring Road and Pipkin Creek Road, and new sidewalk between Waring Road and South Pipkin Road.
  • Safety Upgrades: ADA-compliant transit stop improvements between Waring Road and Pipkin Creek Road.
  • Lighting: new standard street lighting installed within roundabout and approaches.

• US 98 Pedestrian Crossing Between West 2nd St. and West 5th St.

  US 98 Pedestrian Crossing Between West 2nd St. and West 5th St.

  Major Points:

  • Roadway Changes: Mid-block pedestrian crossing and construction of larger sidewalks on the approaches to both sides of the crossing to accommodate the expected volume of pedestrian traffic.
  • Safety Upgrades: New mid-block pedestrian crossings with Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) with signal heads that include two red lenses above a yellow lens attached to an overhead mast arm above the roadway.

  Orlando Health Development - Lakeland Highlands Road

  • Start Date: 1/27/25
  • Project Duration: 180 days
  • Project Boundaries: Lowe's to Winter Lake Rd

  Major Points:

  • Watermain exploratory dig for Orlando Health Development
  • Excavation to begin a proposed waterline installation
  • Existing light pole removal
  • Investigation of an existing forcemain in a potential conflict of the future location of the proposed mast arm

City of Lakeland Projects

• South Edgewood Drive West of McKeel Academy to East of Taft - Work Delayed

  Due to the recent storm event and Water Department water main upgrade and relocation schedule to start in October, this project has been delayed till further notice.

  City of Lakeland crews will begin drainage improvements, sidewalk and driveway construction on the north side of the roadway. Motorists can expect daily lane closure traffic control and flagging operations in place. Motorists and pedestrians can also expect delays and should use alternate routes when available. This project is expected to take approximately six (6) months to complete.

• Emma Street and North Scott Avenue Improvements - Work Begins December 2, 2024

  Starting December 2, 2024, City of Lakeland crews will begin sidewalk, curb, driveway, and ADA curb ramps improvements project.  This work will be done on Emma Street from North Scott Avenue to Florida Avenue and on North Scott Avenue from Emma Street to Parker Street West.  Daily road closures can be expected. Motorists and pedestrians can also expect delays and should use alternate routes when available. This project is expected to take approximately seven (7) months to complete.

• Easton Drive Street Repair - Work Begins February 24, 2025

  In preparation for re-paving this brick street, City crews will have to install concrete ribbon tie-ins on the east and west end of the block of Easton Drive (between Cambridge Avenue and Fairmount Avenue) for the asphalt paving to tie into and the existing brick that will remain in place. The concrete portion of this project is scheduled for the week of February 24, 2025 and is expected to take up to a week to complete. The paving is scheduled for March 10 or 11, 2025 and will be completed in one day. The speed hump will be scheduled within a couple of weeks after paving. During each aspect of this project, traffic control devices will be in place to guide motorists through the work zone, or a detour will be in place when closing this section of roadway is necessary.

  This section of Easton Drive was part of a brick street restoration project five years ago.  The asphalt was removed and restored to the original brick street that existed under the asphalt. During heavy rain events, this section of brick street gets washed out severely and creates a safety issue for motorists. This has happened several times and no remedies have been found to prevent this issue. Once paved, we are also going to install a traffic calming hump on this block to address concerns of speeding.

• Cleveland Heights Blvd Turn Lane Modification - Work Begins February 10, 2025

  Starting February 10, 2025 City of Lakeland crews will begin modification to south bound turn lane at Westover Street. Daily Lane closures can be expected. Motorists and pedestrians can also expect delays and should use alternate routes when available. This project is expected to take approximately three (3) months to complete.

• Storm Pipe Repairs in Various Locations - Work Begins March 24, 2025

  The City will have a contractor in town from March 24, 2025 to April 14, 2025 installing liners into storm pipes as a repair strategy. During this timeframe, the contractor will have their equipment setup on various streets within the City and will have the necessary traffic control signs and flagmen in place to assist motorists. The delays in traffic are expected to be minimal.

• East Edgewood Drive Road Closure on March 13, 2025 at 10 pm to March 14, 2025 at 6 am

  LAKELAND, FL (March 10, 2025) - A section of East Edgewood Drive, between South Florida Avenue and Carolina Avenue, will be closed overnight starting at 10 p.m. on March 13, 2025, for repaving preparations. This work is part of the City’s ongoing preventative maintenance program. The road is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on March 14, 2025.

  The overnight operation will include milling approximately 1.5 inches of the existing asphalt, which will be replaced with a fresh layer of 1.5 inches of new asphalt. Milling is a standard procedure that helps ensure consistent elevations for driveways and ADA ramps, preventing the need for adjustments due to changes in pavement height.

  The closure will occur at night to minimize disruptions to daytime traffic on this busy route. Detour and traffic control signs will be in place to guide motorists. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes if traveling along East Edgewood Drive during the evening of March 13 and into the early morning hours of March 14.  Once the roadway is milled, paving will take place March 17-21, 2025, during daylight hours.  Motorists can expect delays because traffic will be reduced to one lane operations during the paving portion of the project.
