ARREST MADE IN HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION
LAKELAND, FL (December 15, 2020) – On Monday, December 14, 2020, at approximately 5:01 p.m., Lakeland Police officers responded to the 600 block of Emma Street in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male outside of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds. The 49-year-old victim was transported to Lakeland Regional Health, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Based on evidence and multiple eyewitness statements, detectives have determined that Javonte Jaques Nelson, age 28, approached the victim at the mailbox in front of the home on Emma Street. Nelson and the victim were known to each other. The two got into a verbal argument before Nelson pulled a handgun and shot the victim multiple times. Nelson fled the scene but later returned while detectives and crime scene personnel were processing evidence at the residence. Nelson was interviewed and initially denied being at the location. He later admitted being at the site but denied shooting the victim.
Javonte Nelson was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder. Officers transported Nelson to the Polk County Jail without incident. Booking information can be found at https://www.polksheriff.org/inmate-profile/2041105.
