City of Lakeland Hosts Annual Black History Festival: Saturday, February 18th - City News Blog

LAKELAND, FL (February 2, 2023) | All are invited to celebrate Black History Month at the annual Black History Festival at Jackson Park on Saturday, February 18th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be many artisan vendors, food trucks, kids’ activities, and much more for families to enjoy.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their role in US History.  Black History month is the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.  Since 1975, every President of the United States has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.  Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, devote a month to celebrating Black History.

The Black History Festival at Jackson Park (1130 Martin Luther King Junior Avenue) will have many forms of entertainment, including an African Dance Tribute by Crystal’s World of Dance, a boxing skills demonstration from DX Sports, LLC, and spoken word submissions from the MLK Oratorical Contest. The Coleman-Bush Building will be open to showcase a neighborhood history walk highlighting some of the pioneers from Lakeland’s black community with information provided by the Lakeland History and Culture Center. If you are interested in being a vendor at the festival, please visit https://lakelandgov.net/events/black-history-festival. Space is limited.

You will not want to miss the Jackson Park Black History Festival! This event is free to the public and there is something for all ages at this family friendly event. Whether you browse the vendor area, play in a bounce house, or grab a FREE plant at the Parks and Rec. tent, you’re sure to have a good time!
