City News Blog: City of Lakeland Announces Promotion of Emily Colón to Deputy City Manager


LAKELAND, FL (June 2, 2022) ) | The City of Lakeland announces the promotion of Emily Colón as Deputy City Manager. City Manager Shawn Sherrouse said, “I am pleased to promote Mrs. Colón to the position of Deputy City Manager. Through her experiences, hard work and passion for learning, she has developed a tremendous skillset in the city management profession. Emily has already proven herself as an empathetic leader with a devotion to public service.” Sherrouse added, “I am confident that she will continue to serve the City of Lakeland well as we remain dedicated to delivering exceptional municipal services that are responsive and responsible.”

Colón said, “My passion is our people, both internal to the organization and in the community. Every day is an opportunity for us to push the needle further towards performance excellence through strategy and innovation. It’s why I love the work I get to do and am grateful to have been chosen as the City’s Deputy City Manager.”

Colón has worked for the City of Lakeland for the past three years, most recently serving as Assistant to the City Manager and Manager of Innovation and Strategy. Before being promoted to that position May 23, 2021, Colón served as Assistant City Manager, where she has been an integral leader in the City’s Strategic Planning process. Her background includes experiences in Pasco County as Budget Manager, Purchasing Director, Administrative Service Manager for Fleet and Program Administrator of Internal Services Departments before joining the City of Lakeland on April 1, 2019. Prior to working for Pasco County, Colón gained experience at the local, state, and federal levels working as a Florida Gubernatorial Fellow, in Constituent Services for a U.S. Senator.

Colón earned her Associates degree (AA) from Manatee Community College (now State College of Florida) while playing collegiate volleyball.  She holds a Bachelor’s Degree (BA) in International Business and a Master’s Degree of Public Administration (MPA), both from the University of South Florida. Colón is a certified Six Sigma Yellow Belt, an Examiner for the Florida Sterling Council, and an adjunct professor for the University of South Florida’s School of Public Affairs.  Colón recently became a credentialed City Manager through the International City/County Management Association, and she is currently the President of the Suncoast Chapter of the American Society of Public Administration. As Deputy City Manager, Colon will receive an annual salary of $152,962.73, effective June 1, 2022.
