How to Report a Crime
What is the definition of a "crime"?

According to Webster's New World Dictionary, "crime" is defined as "an act committed, or omitted in violation of the law."

Most of us encounter crime, in some fashion, on a frequent basis. Whether its a minor traffic offense or a more serious crime, crime is occuring frequently. When reporting a crime, it is very important to take careful note of the following:

  • Type of crime being committed
  • Where is the crime being committed
  • Is the crime in progress or just occur
  • Get the description of vehicle involved (i.e., color, make, model, year, etc.)
  • Description of suspect (i.e., male, female, how many, race, hair color, clothing description, etc.)
  • Is or was the subject armed with a weapon (i.e., gun, knife or any other item that could inflict injury)
  • Direction of travel
  • Give your name, address and phone number
  • Stay on the line until you are told to hang up

  • Proper Use of 9-1-1
Emergency 9-1-1 is designed to assist the public in obtaining a quick, if not immediate, response to a situation posing immanent harm or danger to persons or property.

The proper use of the 9-1-1 system requires common sense. An example of improper use of the 9-1-1 system is, dialing 9-1-1 to request time correct time, a phone number, or to report a crime that occured with a significant time lapse. It is important to use the 9-1-1 system appropriately in order to serve the public efficiently and effectively.

Only situations that are in-progress, causing threat to the well-being of others, should be reported via the 9-1-1 system.

When an incident occurs of an emergency nature, remain calm and listen carefully to the 9-1-1 operator. The operator's questions are asked to gain information to relay to the officer or emergency responder. By remaining calm and listening to the operator, you will be of the greatest assistance to the person or situation at hand.
